I love to wear cottons and mulmuls in summers, and personally my choice of color has always been white. It helps me keep cool and light in the scorching heat of North India, esp. the hot summers of Rajasthan.
Whites, being my all-time favorites require an undershirt if I am not carrying a dupatta, as white cotton cambric or voile, for that matter, are semi sheer fabrics. So, I have always had good quality cotton or mulmul slips in my wardrobe. Nothing too fancy or lacy, just a basic slip is good enough to provide that extra layering under my whites.
My slips are in 100% natural cotton fabric, which is quintessentially an airy and breathable fabric in itself. For my cotton cambric kurta, I usually go for a voile (commonly known as mulmul) slip, while for my mulmul/voile kurtas, I opt for a cotton cambric slip. These two fabrics take care of the transparency issue and yet keep the breathability factor and comfort intact.
The functionality of my white cotton slips does not end in summer; these are of great value to me during any other season as well. Like when I wear a georgette kurta or a silk one, or for that matter a chiffon or organza, a cotton slip always comes around handy throughout the year, irrespective of the season.
I personally am not a big fan of getting an attached lining in my kurtas, as I feel they become very bulky and lose the fall and flow. So, a good cotton slip is a great option.
It takes care of so many issues that may hinder your comfort quotient, for instance-
1. Prevents transparency
2. Prevents static charges, esp. during dry weather
3. Prevents clinginess, esp. when you are wearing a silk, silk blend or any man-made fabric.
4. Provides a cool comfort layer underneath your kurta or dress and enhances its fall and grace.
