Why I consider polyester as NOT a very good idea for my clothing.

While polyester isn’t necessarily dangerous, but there are several reasons why people consider it a less ideal option for their clothing, depending upon comfort, health and environmental factors. Here is a clear breakdown:

• Traps heat and moisture
  Polyester being a synthetic man-made fiber is non- porous and traps heat and moisture resulting in sweat and heat build-up around your skin. This can feel uncomfortable and clammy especially in hot and humid weather conditions. We have all had that feeling with our synthetics once in our lifetime. Haven’t we?

• Can lead to foul odor
  Now if the fabric doesn’t let your skin breathe, it is certainly becoming a playground for bacteria around your skin. Bacterial build-up leads to foul odor which is very nasty. The problem is even aggravated during summers and humid months. Now, who wants that feeling all day? I think we all have
  experienced this unpleasant odor once in our life time. Haven’t we?

• A strict No for sensitive skin types
  Due to its synthetic nature and non- breathability, polyester may cause skin rashes, itchiness and other irritations to people with sensitive skins. People who already have conditions of eczema or other chemical allergies must not even try these synthetic fabrics for their clothing. They are just going to worsen the conditions. Being a non- breathable fabric polyester does not allow the skin to breathe adequately and it lacks the soft touch of a natural fiber like cotton or linen.

• Antagonistic to the environment
  Polyester is made from petroleum and the process involves significant energy usage and chemical processes. It is also said to shed microplastics in every wash. Now, we all know the adverse effects of microplastics for human health and on the aquatic biodiversity at large. Polyester is non-biodegradable and would take almost forever to break down.

• Leads to uncomfortable static charges
  Synthetics can cause very annoying static charges especially during dry weather conditions. They attract dust, hair and lint. Well, needless to say we all have experienced this.
